1 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking

Your day begins early with a pickup from your location in Kigali around 4:30 AM. Your guide from Gorilla Trek from Africa will ensure you’re comfortable, well-prepared, and ready for the 2.5-hour scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park. Be sure to bring your essentials for the journey: a packed breakfast, your trekking gear, and of course, your excitement for the adventure ahead.

Expect a peaceful and beautiful morning drive as the sun rises over Rwanda’s lush landscapes, casting warm light over the hills and valleys.

What to Bring for the Journey

It's essential to have your trekking permit (usually organized in advance by the tour provider), hiking boots, a rain jacket, insect repellent, and a small backpack to hold your essentials.

Upon arrival, you’ll head straight to the park headquarters for a briefing. Here, rangers provide essential information about gorilla behavior, the trekking process, and conservation efforts, making sure you’re fully prepared for a respectful and fulfilling experience.

Briefing and Preparation for the Trek

The briefing is an opportunity to learn about the specific gorilla family you'll be tracking, as well as the route and conditions of the day. You may also get paired with a small group of fellow trekkers, adding a communal aspect to your journey.

Once prepared, it’s time to set off into the lush jungle. The trek can range from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Your guide will lead you through dense vegetation, along winding trails, and up slopes, pointing out interesting flora and fauna along the way.

Hiking and Locating Gorilla Families

The journey to find the gorillas may involve steep and sometimes slippery trails, but every step brings you closer to a moment like no other.

Time Spent Observing the Gorillas

Once you reach the gorilla family, you’re allowed up to one hour to observe and photograph them. Watch as they interact, groom each other, and go about their day. It’s a deeply moving experience, a rare glimpse into the world of these gentle giants.

After your time with the gorillas, you’ll make your way back to the park headquarters. Here, you can take a short break, enjoy a snack, and reflect on the incredible encounter you’ve just had. The guide will share more insights and answer any lingering questions you might have.

Snacks and Rest at the Park Headquarters

This is also an excellent chance to talk with other trekkers, exchanging stories and impressions. Refreshments will be available to help you refuel for the drive back.

In the afternoon, you’ll start the journey back to Kigali. This relaxed drive is a perfect time to take in the beautiful Rwandan countryside one last time and reflect on the day’s unforgettable experience.
