Early Morning: Pickup and Kigali City Tour

Your journey begins in Kigali, where a guide from Gorilla Trek from Africa will pick you up early in the morning (around 8:00 AM). This city tour offers a glimpse into the city’s rich history and culture. Highlights include visits to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, and other significant landmarks, where you’ll get a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s past, resilience, and vibrant present.

Late Morning: Transfer to Musanze

After the city tour, you’ll set out on a two-hour scenic drive to Musanze, a town located at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains and the entry point to Volcanoes National Park. Along the way, enjoy views of Rwanda’s picturesque rolling hills, lush valleys, and small towns that define the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”

• Suggested Stop: Take a short break along the way for a quick refreshment and stretch your legs before reaching Musanze.

Afternoon: Visit to Iby'iwacu Cultural Village

Upon arrival in Musanze, you'll visit the Iby'iwacu Cultural Village. This cultural experience provides a unique insight into Rwanda’s traditional lifestyle. You’ll witness traditional music and dance performances, interact with locals, and even have the chance to participate in activities like drumming, dancing, or trying out traditional hunting techniques. The visit supports community-based tourism, allowing you to learn about Rwanda’s history and local customs.

Evening: Check-in at Your Hotel in Musanze

After the cultural village visit, head to your hotel in Musanze for an evening of relaxation. Many hotels in Musanze offer beautiful views of the Virunga Mountains, allowing you to unwind and prepare for the thrilling gorilla trek the next day.

Early Morning: Head to Volcanoes National Park Headquarters

Wake up early, enjoy a hearty breakfast at your hotel, and then set off for Volcanoes National Park headquarters by 7:00 AM. Here, you’ll join other trekkers and be briefed by park rangers on the guidelines for gorilla trekking, safety precautions, and what to expect. The rangers will also assign you to a gorilla family based on your preferences and fitness level.

Morning: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Once ready, you’ll embark on your guided trek into the rainforest. The duration of the trek can vary, depending on the location of the gorilla family, and may take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours of hiking. As you make your way through the jungle, your guide will share fascinating insights about the flora, fauna, and unique ecosystems of the park.

Midday: Return to Park Headquarters and Relax

After your trek, head back to the park headquarters where you can take a well-deserved rest, enjoy a snack, and exchange stories with other trekkers. You’ll also receive a certificate of participation to commemorate your gorilla trekking adventure in Rwanda.

Afternoon: Drive Back to Kigali

Once rested, your guide will begin the journey back to Kigali. This relaxed afternoon drive offers time to reflect on your amazing experience with Rwanda’s mountain gorillas and cultural immersion. Expect to arrive back in Kigali in the early evening, concluding your 2-day gorilla trekking safari.
